When calculating the total return for Merck Company, the additional value from the Medco Health spinoff should be included. From the chart above you can see that a $5,000 in Merck at the beginning of 2001 has been almost cut in half. Unfortunately, this was the worst time to buy as Merck was trading at its all time high (adjusted for splits),over $90 a share, thus resulting in a very poor return. On the contrary, an investment in Merck (MRK) at the beginning of 2005 has earned a very nice return.
