When calculating the total return for Merck Company, the additional value from the Medco Health spinoff should be included. From the chart above you can see that a $5,000 investment in Merck at the beginning of 2000 has lost a little more than $1,000 in value. Unfortunately, this was the worst time to buy, as Merck was trading at its all time high (adjusted for splits), over $90 a share, thus resulting in a very poor return. On the contrary, an investment in Merck (MRK) at the beginning of 2005 has earned nearly 50% based on the 2009 closing price and reinvested dividends.
