When calculating the total return for Merck Company, the additional value from the Medco Health spinoff should be included.  Merck has produced some steady returns over most investment time periods.  The beginning of 2000 would have been the worst time to invest as Merck was trading at its all time high (adjusted for splits), over $90 a share.  However, even this investment would have produced a positive return when factoring in the Medco spinoff.  Although an investment 5 years later in 2005 would have resulted in a much better return than the 2000 investment.
