International Paper Company's stock has been moving sideways or downward for several years now.  This may be in part be due to the fact that their dividend did not change for over 10 years. International Paper had been paying $.25 per share every quarter since right before its last stock split in 1995.  Even worse, in 2010 it slashed its dividend to $0.025 per quarter (recentlhy the dividend has been increased and it is now back up to $0.263 per quarter).  It is very difficult for an established company and its corresponding stock to appreciate in value without dividend appreciation.   Of course, high earnings could also stimulate growth, but this also usually leads to dividend growth.
