Microsoft Corporation's (MSFT) initial public offering was on March 13, 1986. Since that time the stock has split 9 times.  If you had invested $5,000 in Microsoft's IPO, you would have more than 1.7 million dollars today when factoring in reinvested dividends.  This is an absolutely amazing return in a little over 25 years.  In recent years, it has slowed to a halt an even shifted into reverse.  In fact, an investment in Microsoft at the beginning of 2000 would only be worth a little less than $3,000 at the end of 2011.
