Applied Materials, Inc. (AMAT) has had some outstanding long term returns with $5,000 invested at the beginning of 1975 growing to over 7 million dollars by the end of 2009.  However, since the turn of the century, AMAT's stock has provided very little return for shareholders. In fact, a $5,000 investment in Applied Material's stock at the beginning of 2000 has fallen over 50% through the end of 2009.  Oddly enough, an investment at the beginning of 2005 would be worth 75% more than the originally investment.
