Applied Materials, Inc. (AMAT) has had some excellent long term returns, but since the turn of the century AMAT's stock has provided very little return for shareholders. However, a $5,000 investment in Applied Material's stock in 1986 would have been worth well over a half million dollars at the end of 2006 with all dividends being reinvested into more stock. AMAT began paying a dividend in March of 2005.
